Bungee jump from Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge

Bungee jumps are one of the most common things on an adrenaline seekers wishlist and one of those things that everyone knows about and is on their list of things to do before they die. Unfortunately, there aren’t many opportunities to bungee jump in the UK. A stereotypical image of the event is being strapped to a cord launching yourself off a bridge in some remote area in South Africa or Australia and any chance to jump in the UK is usually swiftly stopped by the Her Majesty’s finest police officers.

But there is one bridge jump that is legally licensed to launch unwitting Britons towards the murky waters below and that bridge is located in Middlesbrough (not Middlesborough). The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is actaully quite famous for other reasons; it’s the tallest transporter bridge in the world and was featured in Billy Elliott, The Fast Show and probably most famously in Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Built in 1901, it serves as a majestic reminder of the area’s former industrial heritage.

Spanning the River Tees at a towering height of 200ft, the Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge is a uniquely beautiful location to break your bungee jump virginity and there are plenty of great viewpoints for friends and family to film this defining moment. The day starts with a quick briefing and weighing to ensure the correct bungee rope is used. There is no lift, so part of the fun is climbing the seemingly endless stairs to the top of the bridge.

From the stairs is a short walk to the middle of the bridge where you will be strapped to a rope, take one last look at the Teeside scenery and then plummet 2o0ft towards the murky waters of the Tees below where you will be released by staff in a powerboat who will then escort you back to shore and award you with a certificate.

This is the only bridge jump in England - if you want to bungee jump elsewhere you have to do it off a crane - and it’s surprisingly affordable at around £60 (cheapest at time of writing is £60 from Buyagift). Perfect for the bungee jump virgin and veterans who want a great day out for a low price.
